Multidisciplinary workshop by geologist Dr. Hannah Davies and Ines Lechleitner, invited by Miriam Jakob, Felix Classen and Susanne Schmitt as part of "Geteilte Echos"
An Encounter between artistic and academic positions, inviting the participants to make their own explorations. Uferstudios, Berlin, May 2024
We all know what a mountain landscape looks like but what does it smell and taste like?Perhaps a mountain smells and tastes like the plants that grow on it and the water that flows over it but a mountain is more than just what you see on the surface and is often the result of eons of physical processes such as tectonic and erosion. Hochvogel mountain is made of rocks formed in an ancient sea, pushed upwards into the sky by the collision of continents, and eventually worn away by the elements.
In this workshop we explored how taste and smell can be used to explore the mountain of Hochvogel. From the scents of the plants that grow on and around the mountain to the rock itself and its texture. We took a taste and smell based hike around the old mountain starting at the bottom of the valleys working our way up until we saw the whole mountain and the rocks that Hochvogel is composed of, finally considering the fragility of the mountain as it falls apart through debris flow processes.
